You're invited to Faire Gallery/Cafe's Open Mike on the 27th of the month. Read your work, listen, have a great time!

When you're in Seattle, Faire Gallery/Café is the place to visit. Elisheba Johnson had the grand opening of her new gallery in March. Since then, Faire has featured successful monthly art shows, music and, starting last month, open mike poetry and fiction readings.

A few years ago, Ms. Johnson was a recent graduate of the Cornish College of the Arts. She had developed her talent doing paintings, sculpture, collages, mixed media and conceptual art. As a young artist and new grad, she wanted to do something that would create community and involve art. She put together a business plan, went to the Small Business Administration and is now Faire's proud-and energetic-owner.

In June, Faire began its open mike reading series, 27. It's called that because the events are scheduled to be on the 27th of each month. Elisheba's concept for the reading series reflects her own interest in literary writing. She says, "I've been writing since the fourth grade." She says that, in the last century, major art movements have included multifaceted artists who have produced cross-disciplinary projects.

Writing and art are apparently in her genes. Her father is Charles Johnson, a National Book Award winner for his novel Middle Passage-and published cartoonist. Elisheba says that, although the date is still unscheduled, he will be a reader in her 27 series.

Besides art, literary readings and a great view of Seattle, Faire Gallery/Café features live music. The family-friendly café and wine bar serves light meals.
